Daily Oral Care Advice

Oral Health Advice

General overview – at Fulham Road Dental we believe that oral health are paramount to your overall wellbeing and a healthy lifestyle. Regular visits to your dentist are part of the journey to healthy and great looking teeth. We encourage patients to undergo a general examination every 6 months to ensure that any issues are identified early and we can recommend the appropriate treatment. The goal is to help maintain your good oral health and to prevent problems from becoming serious by identifying and treating them as soon as possible.

We believe regular visits to our hygienists are a vital part of maintaining a good preventative oral hygiene routine and we encourage our patients to do so as part of general examinations appointments.

Brushing and flossing are also an important part of oral health.

Adults – brush twice a day after meals with a fluoride toothpaste to remove dental plaque. Plaque is the main cause of tooth decay and inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis. Floss daily to remove plaque from between your teeth and under your gum line, before it can harden into tartar. Once tartar has formed, it can only be removed by a dental hygienist during a professional cleaning. Limit sugary or starchy foods, especially sticky snacks. The more often you snack between meals, the more chances you give bacteria to create the acids that attack your tooth enamel.

Children – it is never too early to teach your children the benefits of healthy oral care. It is important that they understand the importance of taking care of their baby teeth and turning dental care into a fun daily exercise.  Baby teeth do eventually fall out but until they do they play an important role in helping your child bite and chew food, and speak clearly.  Brush them twice a day using a soft bristled toothbrush, age appropriate tooth paste and water.

Infants – It’s important to clean your baby’s gums from an early stage using an infant bum massager or a soft cloth. We recommend a visit to a dentist before your baby’s first birthday to make sure teeth and gums are healthy and are cleaned properly.
